Hellboy: Some History

Hellboy is the creation of Mike Mignola. It is the story of the World's Greatest Paranormal Investigator, who also happens to be a demon. In actuality, he's a demon from Hell, summoned to Earth by the conjurings of a deranged Nazi mage during WWII. He was adopted by the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense and as he grew up, developed into their finest operative (though his marksmanship still leaves a great deal to be desired). He and the Bureau work to protect the world from demons, vampires, faeries, mad gods, werewolves and Nazi menaces.

The story, SEED OF DESTRUCTION, is an introduction to Hellboy and the world. We are also introduced to Abraham Sapien, another Bureau operative, as well as many of the people key to Hellboy's "birth" and upbringing. Hellboy faces Nazi mages and mutated Frog Creatures. This is a tale that perfectly blends horror and humor.

The story, THE WOLVES OF ST. AUGUST, examines werewolves and Hellboy's investigation of them in a old European city.

In a 2-part GHOST/HELLBOY crossover, Hellboy, the World's Greatest Paranormal Investigator, would meet the World's Greatest Paranormal (Ghost). This tale delves into the origin and power of Hellboy's mysterious right hand of stone.

Later, Hellboy's origin is more fully detailed in DHP #100.

Following this, HELLBOY: WAKE THE DEVIL which looks at vampires, and details the Bureau case that is known to be their worst outing ever.

The story, HELLBOY: THE LOST ARMY, details a scneario that involves a lost Persian army from 525 B.C.

The sequel to WAKE THE DEVIL, entitled HELLBOY: ALMOST COLOSSUS tells a "strange tale of violated graves and artificial men."

Links to other Hellboy Sites

Hellboy.com was formerly known as Hellboy: A Plague of Frogs. This is now the "Official" website of Mike Mignola's Hellboy, and is the MOST extensive Hellboy site I have seen. Graphics, information, collectables.

Alz's Hellboy website features a Hellboy timeline, homemade animation, and a really nice art gallery.

Mike Whittenberger's Hellboy site rock!

I think Ralf Hildebrandt's Hellboy site has been around the longest.
It has great story summaries and links to biographies.

The MOST extensive Mignola bibliography ever compiled is maintained by Miguel Angel Alvarez.

Chris' Comic Art Gallery highlights the original art that he owns.
Nice pages of Mignola's Hellboy and Greg Hyland's Heckboy.
